Battlefield 3 to Offer Full Campaign Drop-In Co-Op?

Many gamers nowadays are turning to co-op for their multiplayer fix, and with more and more games bringing co-op play into their collective box of tricks it’s quickly becoming a favourite for a lot of people. Whether it’s a bit of Special Ops on Modern Warfare 2, some joint portal hopping in Portal 2 or a full campaign as a squad of 4 in Operation Flashpoint, working together with a small group of friends is one of the most enjoyable ways to game.

And if an unexpected tip sent in to The Gaming Review this evening is anything to believed, EA’s upcoming Battlefield 3 will offer gamers a huge number of unexpected options to jump into battle alongside their friends and kick some communal ass including, and here’s the big bit, Operation Flashpoint-style 4-player drop-in co-op during the main single player campaign.

EA and DICE have made no secret of the fact they are to bring co-op gameplay into Battlefield 3, but so far the focus has been on a separate set of missions for the multiplayer element. If this tip is to be believed (and we must stress this should be seen as a rumour) we could be looking at a single player squad-based campaign, similar to that seen in Bad Company 2 but with the added option of playing through that same campaign with up to 3 of your friends online. That’s immense. It would fit in with previous comments from EA saying “our focus is to create the best possible multiplayer, single-player, and co-op game” in the same breath as “we have some really cool things that we’ll show later when it comes to dictating how you play with friends”.

As you may have seen from our previous Battlefield footage (here and here amongst others) the upcoming shooter is looking incredible, and this teasing snippet of information could, if it turns out to be true, make everything all the more exciting.

What would you like to see in Battlefield 3? Let us know in the comments…

  1. I would like to see a comeback of the Offline bots for a sandbox SP experience of the coop rather then a silly mission based system with scripted sequences that are not fun and not in-line with BF games. Googleing battlefield and bots in the same sentance will show you just how many people want the MP bots in a SP experience a lot more then any campaign/mission based coop play.

  2. I would like to see 64 online player version on consoles. With EA using server’s they would do well if console owners could experience the battle the same way PC owners do and how intense the battle gets.
