May’s Free Games Preview

Two Bank Holidays and loads of new free games. It’s May!

Pool Nation FX is being offered for another month for free on Xbox One but the new game joining it is Castlestorm: Definitive Edition. It’s 2D physics destruction meets tower defence brawling. Word on the street is that it’s quite good so why not give it a blast?

Xbox 360 owners get Mafia II for free for the first half of the month. A great open world game, this really took me by surprise when it came out with a good story, setting and gameplay. A good freebie.

F1 2013 (odd to give away a game a few years out of date when there are two more recent and better versions) is free for the last part of the month. If you have a hankering for the Vettel dominated F1 years then you’re in luck.

It’s multi format month for Sony with the following all available across PS3, PS4 and Vita. Race the Sun is a super fast racer, staying out of the shadows being the goal to keep your speed up (read our PC review here). Unfinished Swan is a heavily stylised indie classic, exploring a mysterious kingdom with strange puzzles. Finally Hohokum is… weird. You play a sort of kite in a vividly colourful world full of expression.

Murasaki Baby is keeping the weirdness levels up on Vita as you play a little girl in a weird world populated by fantasies and fears.  For the PS4 only, Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is a 2D scrolling fighter set in the world of luche libre. I’m about halfway through and can attest that ‘it’s good fun’ so it should be on your download list. Lastly, Ether One is a story driven adventure game to be played at your own pace – with an option to just experience the story or tackle a variety of puzzles.
