October’s Free Games Preview

Happy Halloween! To celebrate early, here are this month’s free games:

Xbox One:
Valiant Hearts: The Great War (October 1-31) – Xbox users now have chance to pick this up after PS fans got it a while ago. It’s a 2D story based puzzler set in World War 1. It has some most excellent music and a really great story. I’m still only halfway through – I must get back to it.

The Walking Dead (October 16-November 15) – Telltale’s (arguably) best game. The complete first season, it’s the story of Lee and Clementine and how they must survive the zombie apocalypse. It’s brilliant, it’s harrowing. Your choices effect later episodes, it’s getting me all teary eyed thinking about some of the decisions I had to make. It also has the extra episodes which were DLC.

Xbox 360:
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (October 1-15) – it’s been on Xbox One, it’s been on PS4, and now it’s free for Xbox 360 owners. Great intro to Metal Gear V: Phantom Pain (also excellent) it’s good, sneaking fun.

The Walking Dead (October 16-31) – snap across Xbox One and 360 for the second half of October, although this doesn’t look to have the extra content.

PS4 & PS Vita:
Super Meat Boy, PS4, PS Vita – Meat Boy is a super cute, super hard platform. Seriously hard. Be ready to die, a lot. It’s also super awesome. Controller breakingly frustrating, dizzying highs when you finally complete a level. I love Super Meat Boy. I imagine it will be perfectly suited to the Vita also.

Broken Age, PS4, PS Vita – crowdfunding success story of the ages, Broken Age is point and click adventure fun, with the story of two teenagers in separate worlds. It’s also very funny at times.

PS3:
Chariot, PS3 – a physics-based co-op platformer in which a brave princess and her suitor carry a funeral wagon through ancient caves, fending-off swarms of looters while amassing riches, to bury the King’s remains in a worthy gold-filled tomb. It’s pretty good fun.

PS3 & PS Vita:
KickBeat, PS3, PS Vita – Kickbeat is a rhythm action game crossed with kung fun fighting. A election of well known bands are here and you can use your own music for potentially unlimited gameplay.

Kung Fu Rabbit, PS3, PS Vita – 80 levels of cheerful platforming action. Only you, a rabbit, can save the evil taking over the world. You can customise your rabbit. Err, you can do kung fu too!

PS4 and PS3:
Unmechanical: Extended, PS4, PS3 – as is tending to be a theme for free games each month across both formats, this is… a 2D puzzle game. Yeah! You help a robot in a fantasy realm, you fly through levels dealing with traps and pitfalls.
