PSP2 Out Before the 3DS?

There has been a huge amount of speculation over the past few days about the specifications and design of the PSP2, with various sites claiming the suggestions are true, false, or amazingly in one case, both. However on digging through some previous news a friend of TheGamingReview spotted something interesting: the suggestion that the PSP2 is far closer than we think. The interview by itself doesn’t mean a huge amount, but it’s when put alongside everything else that’s happened this week that things get interesting.

Over at IndustryGamers, an interview suggested that developers had PSP2 development kits, and were able to try out the hardware, see what it can do and develop their games. The same developers also suggested there wasn’t a 3DS to do the same thing with, so is it so crazy to suggest the PSP2 might do the jump on the 3DS, or is this just another example of Sony stealing some limelight away from Nintendo? If development kits are in the wild it would certainly explain this week’s frantic “leaks” about the hardware available, and with Sony remaining typically tight-lipped on the matter nobody can genuinely know what’s going on.

Here’s the quote, you can make your own mind up.

We’re not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is

  1. i’ve seen about half a dozen games for the 3ds which look pretty much finished and polished up.. not to mention about another dozen games that are already anounced for launch …. how many psp2 games have i seen… or even heard about?… thats right a big zero…. so its very doubtful that this will happen

  2. Unless Sony is planning a media blitz to the likes we have never seen before.

First, they don’t want to miss out on PSP sales over Christmas, so why would they announce the PSP2 before then?

Think about how much hype they could generate if at CES, they show off the device, and show off a ton of awesome polished up launch titles for it along with a target release date of March (same as the original PSP).

Stores could start taking preorders while the hype is at a maximum high and the device’s launch could suceed off the massive hype such a stealth launch would generate. Stealth launches didn’t work 10 years ago because the internet isn’t what it is today. Today, with emails and instant messaging, forums, blogs and facebook, a stealth launch would spread like wildfire and could actually suceed.

  3. well capcom and crytek have comfirmed the power of 3DS revelations and mercenries and SSF4 all look like ps3 games and crytek have said they got shown some very powerful hardware and said the cry engine could run on this and wouldnt say who from nintendo shown them this powerful hardware ect then theres 70 games all confirmed so psp phone means nothing
