TGR at the Eurogamer Expo 2014

THE TALOS PRINCIPLE
One screen in the Sony area, it’s an FPS puzzle game. The demo was set in a grassy castle courtyard and involved moving around different reflectors to move light and open doors to collect puzzle pieces. This could be a neat little game, and I enjoyed it.

N++
I was hunting for this. I loved N+ a lot. N++ seems more of the same with new and revamped enemies, puzzles and colour schemes. I just hope my PS4 controller can take it.

MINUTES

Never heard of this before but it’s a great little puzzle/score attack game on PS4/Vita by Red Phantom Games (http://redphantomgames.com).

You control a circle which must absorb orange lines, and avoid black lines. You can make your circle bigger to score more points (higher multiplier) but at a greater risk to hitting the black sections. I think this is ideal for Vita, out October. I shall give it a go.

LARA CROFT AND TEMPLE OF OSIRIS
Only one screen showing this off, but the pull of four player co-op was too much to resist.

Some good puzzles and action with mates is going to be a large selling point of this game. Looked nice, played well and simply, with some good puzzle and action elements. If you liked the first, you will love this.

LA COPS
Another game I had heard about but never played. Think Hotline Miami on a slight isometric view, but you control two characters. You can position (or call) one cop to cover you while you move in to take out the criminals, or switch at will. Good action, great sounds.

This is in Steam Early Access at the moment, with a small team of four people working on the game (http://www.la-cops.com). Had a chat with the devs and great news – it’s coming soon to iOS and Android and they’ve just hooked up with Team 17 to get it on Xbox One and PS4 next year.

STARTERS ORDERS 6
I wasn’t expecting to see this at Eurogamer. Essentially a horse racing equivalent to football manager, the demo let you take part in an actual race. What set this apart was the use of an Occulus Rift – racing my horse whilst looking around frantically trying to beat the others was fantastic, another thumbs up for the Rift and VR gaming.

TANGO FIESTA
I feel bad because I didn’t get to play this or even really sit and look at it. However, kudos to these folks for plugging a mango and giving people a go at Mango Fiesta

I’ve since had a quick google and wish I played it. From their website (http://tangofiesta.tumblr.com): “An 80s-themed 4 player co-operative arcade shooter roguelike. Born in the Rezzed 2013 game jam”

HALO: THE MASTER CHIEF COLLECTION
24

I wish I had gone here first. A 90 min queue with only 8 machines running it. Yet after many, many, many hours playing Halo I can say that the look and feel of Halo 2 is definitely alive in Halo 2 multiplayer. The updated maps look fantastic, and are running very smoothly.

LORD OF THE RINGS: SHADOW OF MORDOR
Unfortunately didn’t get to play this, but it did look a lot like Assassin’s Creed (as expected) – although on its own merit looked very good and ran smoothly. People were seeming to have a great time with it.

CYBER CANDY
Ok so not a game but I bought my girlfriend some Hello Kitty chocolates. That’s love that is.

THE EVIL WITHIN
I knew this would be too scary for me, and it probably is. Silent Hill meets Resident Evil in terms of game/atmosphere I think, however I thought the protagonist was so close to the camera it made it feel unplayable to me (it doesn’t help that you sit about 15 inches from a 32 inch set).

BATTLEFIELD HARDLINE
I knew what to expect from the Beta, but ‘Gator Hunt’ was a new map on display set in a small swampish area. This map demo’d the Hotwire mode which is your standard Battlefield Conquest but the control points are vehicles you have to drive. Wow, talk about changing the dynamic! Another twist on a classic mode for Hardline, am gutted it’s delayed till next year but cannot wait. This looked amazing, sounded brilliant.

SUPER SMASH BROS WII U
The Nintendo booth was constantly packed. I saw this at the end of the day on a huge screen where they had a competition on stage. I had forgotten how exciting Smash Bros can be, and whilst I was not wowed by the upscaled 3DS version they had running on TV sets, the Wii U one looks great (and easier to follow the action).

There was a lot to see at Eurogamer and I wish I could have played more. Some titles I only had glancing passes at (Bloodbourne, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, FarCry 4) but long queues. Best advice – check out what’s on and go to the thing you think will have the biggest queues first. They only get bigger through the day!
